How to use this cake cost calculator

Start with what you actually pay and use. The calculator allocates package costs to the recipe, adds the value of your time and business expenses, then estimates a selling price from your chosen margin.

  1. 01

    Add ingredients

Enter each package price and size, then the amount your recipe uses. Use matching mass, volume, or count units.

  2. 02

    Set yield and servings

Enter how many cakes the batch makes and how many servings each cake provides to see a per-serving price.

  3. 03

    Account for the work

Add labor time, your hourly rate, fixed or percentage overhead, and a waste allowance.

  4. 04

    Review your price

Choose a target margin, inspect the breakdown, then save the recipe, export a CSV, or print your estimate.

Complete costing

What should you include in a cake price?

A useful estimate covers more than flour and butter. Include every cost the order creates and the time needed to finish it.

Ingredients & materials

Include cake layers, fillings, frosting, decorations, boards, boxes, dowels, and other items used for the order.

Labor

Count hands-on work such as shopping, preparation, baking, decorating, packaging, cleanup, and order administration.

Overhead

Use fixed overhead for order-specific costs. Use percentage overhead to allocate shared expenses such as utilities and equipment.

Waste & yield

Add your own allowance for trimming, testing, or breakage, then set the batch yield and servings the finished cake provides.

Transparent math

How the calculation works

Each result comes directly from the numbers you enter. The tool does not apply market rates or hidden pricing assumptions.

Ingredient line cost
Package price × recipe amount ÷ package size
Labor
Labor hours × hourly rate
Overhead
Percentage of ingredients + labor, then fixed overhead
Total recipe cost
Ingredients + labor + overhead + waste
Suggested price
Total cost ÷ (1 − target margin)
Price per serving
Suggested price ÷ total servings

Compatible units convert within mass, volume, or count. Mass cannot convert to volume without an ingredient density. Sales tax is not included.

Know the difference

Margin vs. markup

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of cost. They are not interchangeable.

This calculator uses margin Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin)

Your target margin is a business decision. The calculator uses the percentage you enter; it does not recommend a universal rate.

Read the estimate

What do the results mean?

Total recipe cost is the estimated amount needed to produce the full batch before profit.

Suggested selling price applies your chosen margin to that cost. It is an estimate, not a guarantee.

Expected profit is suggested price minus total cost, based entirely on your inputs.

Price per serving divides the suggested price by cakes per batch × servings per cake.

Common questions

Cake costing questions, answered

What time should I include as labor?

Include paid work the order requires: planning, shopping, preparation, baking, decorating, packaging, cleanup, and client communication.

What counts as cake overhead?

Overhead can include shared business costs such as utilities and equipment, plus order costs such as boards, boxes, or venue supplies. Use categories that match your own records.

How do servings affect the cake price?

Servings do not change total cost or suggested price. They divide the suggested price so you can see an estimated price per serving.

Can the calculator convert ingredient units?

Yes, within compatible mass, volume, or count units. It cannot convert mass to volume without ingredient-specific density data.

Where are saved recipes stored?

Saved recipes remain in this browser on this device. Clearing browser storage may remove them, so export a CSV when you need a separate record.

Does the suggested price include sales tax?

No. The result excludes sales tax. Check the rules that apply to your location before preparing a customer quote.
